How to design with colour

Interior colour choices are highly subjective, which means there’s no right or wrong way to select a colour scheme for your space. The most important consideration is finding a colour palette that feels right to you. The following tips on choosing an interior colour scheme will help you fill rooms with shades that reflect your personal style.

1. Find an anchor piece and work with complimentary colours

One of our favourite ways to incorporate colour into a space is through the use of prints. We recommend choosing a print that has a great base colour (such as a beautiful deep brown or forrest green) and build from there. Complimentary colours can then be tied in through the use of floor rugs, lamps shades and throw blankets to create a room that feels curated and beautiful.

2. When in doubt, go back to the basics and build

It’s no understatement to say that earthy and neutral tones have dominated interior design for some time. However, as we see more and more people drawn to colour, we see this shifting in 2024. People are likely to maintain the foundation of a neutral palette but infuse it with a lively twist by incorporating strategic pops of colour; injecting energy and personality into their spaces. Brands such as Muuto and Hay are known for nailing colour, and are a great place to start when seeking out vibrant homewares and furniture.

3. Experiment with unique colour combinations

Ever the colour-loving guru, our trade consultant Jade predicts the rise in unusual colour combinations in the interior design. “Currently, I'm observing a shift towards unexpected colour choices in interiors, such as bold combinations like blue paired with khaki and green alongside black,” she shares. “This divergence from traditional predictions adds an exciting and personalised dimension to colour trends within interior design.”

 4. Play around with decor

When it comes to interior design, rugs are often the unsung heroes that tie a space together. They have the power to transform a room from plain and uninspiring to stylish and inviting.

Rugs are an excellent way to introduce colour, pattern, and visual interest to a room. They can act as a focal point or a statement piece, injecting personality and style into an otherwise neutral space. Whether you opt for a bold and vibrant rug to make a statement or a subtle and neutral one to complement existing decor, the possibilities are endless.
