Originally designed by Niels Jørgen Haugesen in the late ‘70s, the X-Line Chair has joined HAY’s universe of timeless, original designs. About the Designer

Niels Jorgen Haugesen

Niels Jørgen Haugesen (1936-2013) was a leading Danish designer. After graduating from the Danish School of Arts, Crafts and Design, he worked under Arne Jacobsen, one of the most visionary designers of the time. Jacobsen’s dedication to craftsmanship and attention to detail influenced Haugesen’s values and design philosophy, leading to minimalistic designs characterised by clean lines that combined visual lightness with structural clarity. Driven by qualities like honesty and humility, he focused more on the utility and purpose of the object rather than seeking recognition or status. Haugesen designed the iconic X-Line Chair in 1977.
